The OGWBT – teamwork makes the dream work!

Sine labore nihil.

Latin. The tomato ketchup of English – not essential but still indispensable. Its semantic descendants help English speakers avoid resorting to German. It keeps sales of printer consumables buoyant. Most handily of all, it lets you build impressive phrases without knowing what the words mean. The Old Guy Who Breaks Things went to school long enough ago to learn some Latin, and not break English.

Take “collaboration”. This avoids using uncomfortable Anglo-Saxon equivalents such as “teamwork” (no hiding place: must be a team, must do work), consumes way more ink and, as the industry I have always worked in recently realised, can reinforce the popular myth that life is futile without computers.

The Old Guy looks at “collaboration” and sees “working together”. So there has to be some “work” somewhere. Good solid Anglo-Saxon work, not dictionary option (a): a task or tasks to be undertaken; but (b): activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a result. Where you do it is your workplace, which in the modern world is, well, anywhere.

So you end up with the Microsoft Modern Workplace. An any place, anywhere, anytime Martini of Office365, security and operational management. Way more than collaboration; and too vast a cocktail for a single specialist or broad-based Microsoft partner to mix. So we got together with a few other Microsoft bartenders of our acquaintance and formed an alliance (“a relationship based on similarity of interests, nature, or qualities”) to deliver each key component* of the Modern Workplace side by side, with the odd.

Look out for more on soon, from the young folk at Insync and other bright sparks of their generation, on the Modern Workplace Alliance. Suavely Latin on the outside, solidly Anglo-Saxon on the inside. Way ahead of, say, television. (“The word is half Latin and half Greek. No good can come of it.” – C.P. Scott).

And after all that drinking talk…

Nunc est bibendum. Cheers!
